Hopeless Border Conflictions

As the work over unit makes its third swap run sirens wail on the Highway between La Pryor and Uvalde. The drilling superintendent spots smoke coming from a small pickup. 500 pounds of Pot is going up in smoke in the bed of the truck as the Mexican National tries to flee the Border Patrol. This happens all the time say the Zavala County deputy sheriffs as they ropes off the scene and the volunteer fire department douses the blaze.

Just another runner from across the border in Eagle Pass trying to deliver a load to make a buck?

Just another average day in the patch in South Texas?

How did the border become out of control?

I remember watching two brothers from Laredo, one was smuggling cattle out of Mexico, and the other was smuggling chicken into Mexico as they became pillars of local society. The problem has been here for years. It was just a minor case of border rash until 9-11.

The National Guard deployment has been a joke. They did not even bring bullets for their guns. Year before lasts Border Patrol agent of the year was recently convicted along with a fellow agent for shooting a fleeing smuggler in the posterior while fleeing across the Rio Grande. The smuggler was granted immunity from prosecution for testifying against the agents by the U.S. AG’s office. The bad guy is also suing the government.

The politicians want block votes for their respective parties. Labor Unions want to collects dues from hard working illegal aliens. Mexico wants the cash flow. Everyone else seems to want cheap yard work and maid service. The Border Patrol wants someone to back them up when they do their job.

The idea is for the public to support the local sheriffs by providing them eyes in the sky to find and catch the bad guys. The idea was hatched by a talk show guy from Houston and it’s the best plan I’ve heard. They are raising $100,000 to provide a slow flying plane to see what’s coming over the border in 4 remote Southwest Texas Counties. They will auction off the cars and trucks captured from the busts and buy the plane. Eyes on the Border plans to repeat the process until all the sheriffs have the help they need to protect their counties and our country. It’s a start that doesn’t involve politicians, unions, Mexico, The National Guard or the Border Patrol.
